On Jul 21, the Midwest Health Initiative (MHI) will host LIVE WELL STL, a summer summit meeting of community leaders who will be deciding how MHI will focus its health improvement efforts. One goal of the event is to decide what should be the ONE shared health improvement focus for the St. Louis region. Friends of the St. Louis Diabetes Coalition are invited to this forum on Thursday, July 21, 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. @ Saint Louis University Il Monastero Conference Center. Should diabetes be the ONE shared health improvement area for the region? Come and share your opinions, experiences and ideas as MHI stirs up dialogue about community health.

St. Louisians to Present Diabetes Research at 2011 ADA Scientific Meetings in San Diego

Missouri Medicaid Basics provides an overview and specific data on MO HealthNet. The report includes details on eligibility, key programs, delivery systems, and the financing and expenditures related to MO HealthNet. The 2011 edition has a new section that examines incentives in the federal health reform law to make changes in the Medicaid program. To first learn more about the Midwest Health Initiative and this effort, please read below. The Midwest Health Initiative (MHI) is a non-profit organization that brings together patients, physicians, employers, hospitals, insurers and other community leaders to improve health and health care across the St. Louis region. Established in 2009, MHI believes in the power of information and collaboration. In addition to hosting a common table for regional leaders, MHI manages a community data warehouse that includes medical and pharmacy claims from 2 million people across the St. Louis region and Mid-Missouri. In July, MHI will convene business, health care and other community leaders from across the region for a half-day Live Well STL Summit. Attendees will determine one disease or condition to serve as the initial focus for Live Well STL, an ongoing, regional, collaborative health improvement effort led by MHI. The unifying purpose of Live Well STL is to bring together a wide breadth of talent and resources to demonstrate substantial improvement for one health condition. While there are many health improvement opportunities, MHI seeks success in one area to lay a foundation for broader gains in the future. As a health care leader, MHI asks for your guidance, collaboration and support in creating dialogue around the priority and how it should be addressed. As a first step, MHI invites you to complete this brief questionnaire. Please click here to fill out the questionnaire. It should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Responses are requested by June 10th. The results will be presented at the Summit to guide attendee discussion and consensus development. “So What Can I Eat?” is Answered for More than 250 People with Diabetes

On Sat May 14… 258 people gathered at the fabulous Chase Park Plaza Ballroom in St. Louis to be part of So What Can I Eat?, a community diabetes education program presented by the St. Louis Diabetes Coalition. Joan McGinnis, MSN, CDE introduced featured speaker Pat Speirs, RD, CDE of Loyola University Chicago, who delivered an practical and inspirational presentation that focused on carb counting. She and Dr. Eric Armbrecht, PhD fielded excellent questions from attentive and engaged participants who had come from all over the region. This outstanding event was made possible by the generous support of Roche Accu-CHEK, Novo Nordisk and promotional assistance of many partners, including Personal Care Products, Liberty Medical, Visiting Nurses Association, Washington University Diabetes Center, Saint Louis University, SLUCare, JDRF, American Diabetes Association. Questions and comments by the participants re-affirmed a belief that the #1 question of people with diabetes still is: So What Can I Eat?. Participants were invited to join the Coalition’s newest program to provide diabetes self-management support — KICK Diabetes. Thank you to the team of 8 volunteers who helped check-in all of the participants. What a great day!!!!

CHIPS is currently recruiting nurses to join its Community Health Volunteer Corps to assist with blood pressure and blood glucose testing, and to offer education and referrals. The next training is on June 5th at 5:30 PM. Get involved in community health nursing with CHIPS Health and Wellness Center, a non-profit serving the uninsured and underinsured of St.Louis.
